The nightclub Might As Well, located on Highway 544 near Coastal Carolina University, has voluntarily closed as a result of recent discussions between University officials, the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office, and the owner and management of the club.

Concerned about the club's history of alcohol violations and its proximity to campus, the University approached the Solicitor's Office in September looking toward the possibility of seeking a nuisance action against the club.

Although no formal legal action was taken, the club chose voluntarily to close its doors after discussions with CCU officials and representatives of the Solicitor's Office.

"Our role is to ensure that businesses that are patronized by our students follow the rules. CCU will not hesitate to seek enforcement of all state nuisance laws when necessary," Chief David Roper, director of CCU's Office of Public Safety stated.

CCU President David A. DeCenzo credits the Solicitor's Office for its prompt response and cooperation, and the property owner for recognizing the seriousness of the issues involved.

For more information, contact Martha Hunn, CCU director of news and public affairs, at 843-349-2962.
