(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The director of South Carolina's revenue agency says a computer hacker has also breached companies' tax information.

Director Jim Etter told senators Tuesday that companies' state identification numbers were in the file accessed by an international hacker. He says he doesn't know how many.

Those comments came toward the end of a several-hour grilling from Senate Finance Committee members. Etter was briefing senators on Friday's announcement that up to 3.6 million records from as far back as 1998 may have been compromised.

Etter says the hacker had to have certain credentials to get into the agency's computer system. He says 250 employees have those codes.

The state is offering residents free credit monitoring for a year through Experian. The state agreed to pay up to $12 million for the service.
