COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina motorists can get cash for every auto or marine battery they turn in during a cleanup effort that runs the rest of this month.

AAA Carolinas is offering $5 a battery during the Great Fall Battery Roundup. The recycling effort starts Tuesday and runs through the end of the month.

AAA Carolinas president David Parsons says improperly disposed batteries hurt the environment. In the past three years, AAA Carolinas has collected and recycled more than 150,000 batteries.

AAA collects and recycles more than 1 million batteries a year nationwide.
