Coastal Carolina University basketball player Daniel Nieman was arrested just before midnight Friday for Driving Under the Influence.

Conway police were called to Wild Wing Boulevard for a motor vehicle accident, but no one was in the car.

Police say the car left the road and overturned.

Police found the driver, who they say is Nieman, and put him under arrest. They say his breath smelled of alcohol and he had red glassy eyes.

At the police department, officers say Nieman failed two field sobriety tests and refused a breathalyzer.

Police say Nieman didn't have a driver's license with him, but said he had a valid license in North Carolina. Police couldn't find a license for him in either South Carolina or North Carolina.

They booked Nieman into J. Reuben Long Detention Center for Driving Under the Influence, Hit and Run and No South Carolina Driver's License.

He was released from jail Friday at noon.

CCU has suspended Nieman for the fall semester for violating the school's code of conduct.

The 21-year-old Nieman was stopped last month in a vehicle with six other people and charged with an open container violation.

He was arrested in his hometown of Concord, N.C., in 2009 and pled guilty to a misdemeanor drug paraphernalia possession charge.

He received 24 hours of community service and 12 months of probation.

Nieman started all 34 games and averaged 6.2 points a game last season. Coastal finished 28-6 and played in the National Invitation Tournament.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
