Fire destroyed a building on Elm Street in downtown Lumberton Wednesday morning, according to Lumberton Fire Chief John Paul Ivey.
Firefighters were called to the 300 block of Elm Street about 7 a.m. to find flames coming out of the building.
They had the fire under control in about an hour but expect it to continue to smolder for a couple of days.
The building was being cleaned out and was going to be used as a church, according to Chief Ivey.
He says they don't yet know what started the fire.
No one was hurt.
