BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WPDE) - A gospel play titled God's Trombones is coming to Bennettsville.

The play was written in 1927 by James Weldon Johnson and will take center stage at the Word of Life Christian Center Ministries on West Main Street on October 13 at 6 p.m.

It's presented by the Community Enrichment Outreach Organization in partnership with the Upsilon Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Coordinators of the play say they wanted to bring something positive to Bennettsville and they're hoping it will unite the community.

"We wanted to have this program at home. Now surely we could have had it and probably had thousands of people to attend but it's not home," said Pat Henegan, coordinator.

"I chose Bennettsville because Bennettsville is my home. And I do bring cultural events here every year," added Catherine Gregg, coordinator.

God's Trombone features inspirational sermons of African-American preachers.

Several ministers in the community will be apart of the production and have spent weeks learning their roles.

You'll see Reverend Eddie Davis, Reverend Jeremy Bethea, Reverened James Douglas, Reverend Sterling Mosby, Reverend Jeffrey Salley, Revered Bert Lattaker, III, Reverend Reginald McLeod, Reverend James Smith and Minister Louise Taylor.

The play will also feature Ted Martin and the Gospel Music Workshop Choir of Charlotte, Zep Harrison and Sounds of Praise along with nine trombone performers.

"It's a work of art and we owe that to these wonderful people. We decided that the people of Bennettsville will not be cheated they deserve to have a production of the magnitude that would fit any city in America," said Donald Gilliard, the play's Director.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

You can purchase a ticket by calling Catherine Gregg at (843) 479-9991 or Patricia Henegan at (843) 479-7838.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and the play starts at 6 p.m.
