WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - An alumni group from the University of North Carolina Wilmington wants to raise funds to shoot a movie based on the 1898 race riots.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports the film studies alumni group has launched a viral campaign to raise money for "The Red Cape." It's a 40-minute film that follows two fictional black characters during the forced removal of Wilmington's Republican government and black business owners.

Screenwriter and director Nelson Oliver, and producers Brendon Murphy and Jon Cohen, have tapped a website where ordinary people back creative projects to raise money for visual effects and other work.

Murphy says the group has until midnight Sept. 14 to meet its $30,000 goal or lose all of the web donations. So far, the group has raised nearly $5,000.
