An accidental gas spill forced the closure of Mullins High School Tuesday, according to Marion County School District Superintendent Dr. Dan Strickland.
A custodian knocked over a container of gas just after 10:30 a.m., Strickland said, and the air conditioning vents carried the smell throughout the building.
School administrators evacuated the building as soon as they realized something was wrong.
Students and staff were placed in the gym.
Firefighters responded and determined it was a gas spill.
They recommended school administrators send students home because of the strong gas odor.
Parents were notified and students were dismissed at 12:45 p.m.
Strickland says firefighters placed fans in the building to draw out the smell and say it's beginning to go away.
Classes will resume as normal on Wednesday.
