FLORENCE, S.C. (WPDE) - Dozens of people spent the night in jail after being arrested for various traffic violations during a massive checkpoint in the Pee Dee.
Law enforcement officers from Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion and Marlboro counties held the checkpoint on highway 52 Friday night in Florence. They set up near Florence Darlington Technical College.
Officers arrested many for driving under the influence, open containers, possesion of crack cocaine and marijuana.
"These types of operations help reduce the incidents of drunk driving and traffic accidents that's why we're here," said Capt. Michael Nunn with the Florence County Sheriff's Office.
"It's just a combined working effort to try and take the drunk drivers off the road," added Sgt. Jimmy Horton with Bennettsville Police Department.
Police say the operation was a success. They will release the final numbers of those arrested on Monday.
