Marques Ramon Brown, 27, of Whiteville, North Carolina, was arrested and charged with murder Tuesday night in the death of a Lumberton police officer.
Lumberton police say the officer, Jeremiah Goodson, was off-duty Tuesday morning when he spotted Brown at the Express Depo/Dairy Queen on Fayetteville Road and called for backup.
Brown was wanted by Lumberton police.
An officer in a marked patrol car arrived and when they approached the Brown's car, police say Brown started firing from inside the vehicle.
Goodson, 33, was hit more than once and died a couple of hours later at the hospital.
The other officer was able to take Brown into custody, according to Barnes.
Lumberton Police Chief Michael McNeill says Goodson's death has taken a toll on him. He says Goodson was good guy who did his job and was loved by everyone.
Goodson grew up in Lumberton and has been with Lumberton Police for six years. He was assigned as a resource officer at Lumberton High School and also worked in the gang unit.
Chief McNeil says Goodson's wife is expecting their second child and had to be hospitalized today after learning what happened to her husband. NewsChannel 15 has been told she is in stable condition.
McNeill is asking the community to pray for his department and Goodson's family.
