In six hours on Wednesday, we've had close to 5 thousand lightning strikes in our area so what can you do to protect your home from lightning?
To protect your property, the best things you can do is to load up on surge protectors and make sure you have the right insurance but the biggest thing you can do is unplug your electrical appliances, according to Lt. Christain Sliker with the Myrtle Beach Fire department.
"All surge protectors are not created equal," Sliker says.
He adds that some power strips are basically just an extension cord, and the sure fire way is to check on the back of the box or bottom
"A surge protector has an overload protection on it, which will secure your equipment, in any kind of electrical surge," he adds.
As far as insurance, Independent Insurance Agent Tommy Clark says most deductibles are at least $250, or a $500 deductible. It will cover damaged appliances or even the loss of your home. Cook says you should also consider protection from the other storm related elements.
"Make sure you have windstorm coverage. A lot of companies don't write coverage in certain areas with windstorm included, so you may have to buy a separate policy. You also may want to consider flood insurance."
