(AP) -- The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is trying out a new system that will allow first-time drivers to take their written and road skill driving tests at 30 commercial driver training schools across the state.

DMV officials said Wednesday the new program started this week in 13 counties. The program will be evaluated after several months to see if it is working properly.

DMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo says the move will cut wait times in agency offices. Shwedo says the schools must use DMV-trained instructors.

The first-time drivers must have a passenger vehicle beginner's permit for six months. If they pass the written test and road skills test at a commercial driving school, they get a certificate to take to the DMV for the driver's license.
