Shannon Cooper, the mother arrested after cheering at her daughter's high school graduation, pleaded not guilty Wednesday and requested a jury trial.
Her trial date has been set for September 24 at the Florence City County Complex.
Cooper was arrested June 2 and charged with disorderly conduct at South Florence High School.
The story we did with Cooper went viral, and Cooper told us she decided she was going to fight the charges by pleading not guilty.
In court Wednesday morning, she did just that. Cooper admits to cheering, but says she was not disorderly.
Florence Police Chief Anson Shells said it was announced before the ceremony that anyone who cheered or screamed would be escorted out of the building.
He declined to talk specifically about Cooper's case, but said those who cheered were escorted out and those who were disorderly were arrested.
Cooper says she wasn't loud and stopped cheering before the next graduate's name was called. She said she believes her civil rights have been violated.
We've asked Florence School District One for a copy of the video of South Florence High School graduation ceremony. The district says it will consult with an attorney to determine if the video can be released.
