A piece of tape covers where a bullet came through a home on Hunter Drive in Laurinburg last Saturday afternoon. An 8-year-old boy, who was in his bedroom playing, was wounded in his left shoulder and jaw.
The child was initially taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital but later air liftedto Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The boy's uncle, Quinten Adams, says the child is doing much better and could come home this week, but still has a ways to go.
"He's opened his eyes up, squeezing hands. They still won't let him talk. The bullet wedged like under his tongue. They haven't decided if they gonna take it out yet or not," said Adams.
Laurinburg police have charged two boys, ages 15 and 16 , each with Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, Going Armed to The Terror of the Public, Possession of a Handgun by a Minor, Shooting Into an Occupied Dwelling Inflicting Serious Injury, Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits.
Antonio O'Brian Lane, 16, appeared in court Monday morning for a bond hearing. His bail was set at $66, 500. Police say he remains in custody.
The 15-year-old is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.
Many residents on Hunter Drive gathered Monday morning to talk about what happened. Angela Evans lives across the street from the 8-year-old. She called 911 for his mother.
"All she kept saying was who shot a gun? Who shot a gun? My son's been shot. My son's been shot and I ran over there to help her and that's when I called 911," said Angela Evans.
Adams and Evans say there's just too much violence happening in Laurinburg and it scares them.
Adams said, " What is our police doing around here? Why all these little kids have guns?"
"They really need to put their mind and their work effort toward solving these murders in Scotland County," said Evans.
The Laurinburg City Manager , Ed Burchins said there's been 14 murders in the past six years. He says four of them remain unsolved.
