A Darlington County couple is accused of neglecting the woman's 2-year-old daughter, who was brought to the hospital Wednesday with second degree burns to her buttocks and inner thighs, as well as bruises and a black eye.

Kiera Smith, 20, and her boyfriend, Jacques Wright, 20, are charged with Unlawful Neglect of a Child.

Captain Andy Locklair, with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office, says the couple failed to take the child to the hospital in a timely fashion after she was injured.

A relative of Smith's daughter brought the child to the hospital Wednesday, and hospital staff notified authorities of the abuse.

Locklair says they believe the child was injured last Saturday, but they're still trying to determine how and where.

The child has been placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services.
