(AP) -- A Senate panel has advanced a bill that expands students' educational options within public schools.

The bill approved Wednesday by a subcommittee would require districts to offer elementary, middle and high school students at least one additional choice beyond the school they are zoned to attend. It also allows some students to attend school in another district.

Supporters include teacher and school administrators' associations.

Former Superintendent Jim Rex pushed for the bill in 2007, as he sought to expand choices within the public system. But former Gov. Mark Sanford vetoed the measure because it didn't help parents send their children to private schools, and the House upheld his veto.

Public options such as single-gender and Montessori classes were expanded without the law, but officials say many districts need the push.
