Darlington County deputies charged Timothy Schaefer, 34, with 13 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and four counts of sexual solicitation of a minor.
Deputies say this past Halloween, probation officials went to Schaefer's home for a routine inspection because he is a registered sex offender. They say he was convicted in 2007 for a sex crime. Officers say probation agents found Schaefer to be in violation of his probation because there were children in his home.
Deputies arrested him and got a search warrant to seize his computer. They sent the computer to be forensically analyzed.
In the meantime, Schaefer was sent back to prison for the probation violation and was released last month. Officers say he had to re-register as a sex offender and he did.
Two weeks ago, deputies got the results of what was found on Schaefer's computer and they say it contained 13 pornographic pictures of children and four sexually-explicit pictures he took himself of a girl, under age 12, who is his relative.
Officers say they got arrest warrants, but couldn't locate Schaefer. So they entered him in a national crime database for fugitives.
Monday, they say Schaefer showed up at the Darlington County Sheriff's Office to register again as a sex offender. It was his birthday and state requires offenders to register on their birthdays.
Deputies say he was taken into custody and remains at the Darlington County Detention Center. A bond hearing is expected to be held for him Tuesday afternoon.
