Parts of Lake City were in the dark Wednesday night after two large transformers exploded at a power substation.

South Lynches Fire Chief Sam Brockington says his crews responded to the fire around 7 p.m.

He says firefighters stayed 200 feet away until engineers with Santee Electric Co-op gave them the okay to proceed closer.

Brockington says they went in and had the fire out by 7:30.

He says crews remained on scene just in case the fire rekindled.
