MYRTLE BEACH -- A North Carolina man gave Myrtle Beach police false information regarding a shooting at a hotel on Saturday night, according to Capt. David Knipes.

Officers responded to the Westgate Hotel at 415 S. Ocean Boulevard at 7:40 p.m. for reports of a guest who'd been shot in one of the rooms, according to the report.

When police arrived, a guest was holding a towel to the gunshot wound on the victim's stomach. Police say he told them the victim had been shot by a man they didn't know after he opened the room door for him.

Police questioned other witnesses, including a Westgate Hotel employee who told officers the shooting was accidental. Police say the man holding the towel to the victim's stomach eventually admitted that he'd accidentally shot the gun, then threw it behind the hotel.

The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition, Capt. Knipes said Monday morning.

Myrtle Beach police may charge the man for giving false information to police, but he will not face charges for the shooting, Capt. Knipes added.
