(AP) -- A bill requiring South Carolina taxpayers to receive a detailed receipt of how their state taxes are spent has advanced in the Senate.

The measure requires the Department of Revenue to post on tax forms and include in confirmation emails charts detailing how revenue from sales taxes, income taxes and fees is spent. That includes what percentage of state spending goes toward each budget category. Explanations must accompany the charts. Democratic Sen. Vincent Sheheen of Camden said Wednesday it's a common sense transparency bill.

The measure is part of the Senate Democratic caucus' legislative agenda.

A vote this week sent the bill to the full Senate Finance Committee.

Supporters say the chart would be similar to those that many counties provide in receipts for property tax payments.
