Florence firefighters responded to a fire at a multi-family dwelling around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
When crews arrived, heavy smoke was showing from the structure in the 600 block of Nome Street, according to Florence Fire Marshal Ken Carr.
Firefighters from three stations were able to contain the fire in about 30 minutes.
All of the residents were able to get outside and were not hurt, Carr said.
Fire investigators determined ashes from a fireplace that were thrown out too close to structure caused the fire.
The residents are being helped by the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
The Florence Fire Department would like to remind all residents who use wood stoves or fireplaces to place all embers and ashes in an approved non-combustible container until they are completely cold before discarding them.
