HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) - Horry County Fire Rescue and the South Carolina Forestry Commission spent Sunday afternoon on the scene of a brush fire behind Palmetto Pointe, which is off highway 17 in the Socastee area.
Crews were called to Palmetto Glen Drive just after 3:00 Sunday afternoon.
HCFR Public Information Officer Leslie Yancey says 15 acres of land burned. She says they are watching 15 homes near the fire. HCFR will remain on scene throughout the night.
Crews contained the fire as of 7:00 tonight. Forestry Commission Spokesman Scott Hawkins says the fire started by "children playing with fire in the woods." He adds a ticket will not be issued.
Neighbors spent the afternoon watching from across the street as they waiting to find out if it was safe to go back inside.
"I was halfway through a nap on the couch and the wife woke me up and asked me about the smoke coming towards the house. We decided to walk back about 20 minutes into seeing the smoke looked out and saw 5 firefighters about 2 houses up and next thing we know there are blazes in our backyard," Bryan Rushton, who lives in the neighborhood says.
Yancey adds there are no injuries or evacuations.
Pee Dee and Grand Strand counties are currently under a red flag alert issued by the Forestry Commission.
