During Monday night's debate on Fox News, the Grand Strand and Pee Dee were mentioned specifically by the candidates.

Rick Perry used the Georgetown Steel Mill to attack Mitt Romney over his work at Bain Capital, saying the venture capital fund picked over the mill when it shut down.

Meanwhile, Newt Gingrich took up the issue of I-73. "The area that ought to be I-73, was called by Barack Obama "the corridor of shame" because of unemployment. Has it improved in three years? No. They haven't built the road, they haven't helped the people, they haven't done anything."

The former speaker got one of the only standing ovations of the night with that remark.

Last week, supporters of I-73 held a media event, hoping to bring the proposed interstate to the attention of the presidential candidates.
