A road project in Florence is stirring controversy, some saying it's politically motivated.

The North Florence citizens group held a news conference Friday to say thank you to Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela and Senator Hugh Leatherman.

The two were instrumental in getting state transportation money to repave, regrade and repair drainage problems on Oakland Avenue.

The group members say they believe the mayor is sincere in his efforts, even if the election is one year away.

"We want to give thanks you know, you know. A lot of people say it's political reasons but to me, I don't care what kind of reason long as it get done," said Betty Gregg.

At a news conference earlier this week, Mayor Wukela told NewsChannel 15 he found out just how bad Oakland Avenue when was campaigning in 2008.

He says he made it one of his top priorities to get relief for residents there.
