COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A three-pet limit for residents in suburban areas around Columbia is heading to Richland County Council.
The State newspaper reports Sunday that a committee is expected to review the proposal Nov. 22. The limit would require a public hearing before going to the full county council.
A draft of the measure would limit residents in unincorporated areas of the county to three pets, unless they live in areas zoned rural.
The proposal comes after council members asked for suggestions on how to curb uncontrolled breeding facilities.
Councilman Bill Malinowski opposes the limit. He says it could discourage people from licensing their pets.
The city of Columbia already has a two-dog limit. City superintendent of animal services Marli Drum says the limit is enforced when neighbors complain.
