COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina newspapers published between 1860 and 1922 can be accessed on the Web thanks to a project of the University of South Carolina Libraries.

The university says its libraries' South Carolina Digital Newspaper Program offers a glimpse into life in the Palmetto State during some of its most turbulent times.

The program was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The website hosted by the Library of Congress is titled "Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers."

It features fully accessible issues of newspapers including The Columbia Phoenix, Charleston Daily News, and The Orangeburg Times and Democrat.

Additional newspapers published between 1836 and 1922 will be digitized over the next two years. Plans call for more than 200,000 pages to be digitized by 2013.
