(AP) -- South Carolina's governor has verbally authorized the state to deploy National Guardsmen, dump trucks and Humvees to Vermont to help the state recover from damage caused by Hurricane Irene.

A spokesman for Gov. Nikki Haley says she has authorized the deployment of 50 National Guardsmen, 19 20-ton dump trucks and six Humvees.

Spokesman Rob Godfrey says he expects the formal paperwork to be signed Tuesday. The order was made as part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, a multi-state aid agreement among states to share resources during disasters.

Irene's damage closed many roads in Vermont and dozens of communities continue to dig out after torrential downpours last Sunday caused by the storm. About 50 homes and businesses remained without power Sunday, down from 70,000 in the storm's wake.
