BUXTON, N.C. (AP) - More than a week after Hurricane Irene made landfall in North Carolina, residents of Hatteras Island are being allowed to return home.
Residents of the village of Buxton can return home Sunday with people who live in Hatteras village being able to return Monday. Frisco residents can board the ferry to their homes Tuesday.
No schedule has been set to allow residents of the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon to return. Those northernmost villages suffered the most damage in the storm, which made landfall Aug. 27 near Cape Lookout.
Meanwhile, a community meeting was held Sunday at the Avon Volunteer Fire Department. County commissioners Warren Judge and Allen Burrus discussed the recovery effort with residents.
