Bert and Ernie have been best friends living on Sesame Street for more than 40 years. The puppet duo has been entertaining children year after year on the long-running PBS television show while teaching youth that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.
More recently, some have suggested that Bert and Ernie could be more than just friends, even pushing for the two to get married.
Thousands of same-sex couples have been married in New York since gay marriage was legalized in the state in July and an online effort on Facebook to wed Bert and Ernie is creating a buzz. "Bert and Ernie Get Married" already has close to 7,000 Facebook fans.
Opponents of gay marriage have created another page named "Bert and Ernie Should NOT Get Married" which has close to 700 fans.
