NewsChannel 15 told you first that SC state Rep. Thad Viers (R-Horry) planned to announce his candidacy for the new 7th Congressional District seat, and Thursday morning Viers did just that.

Governor Nikki Haley signed the bill creating the new district in Myrtle Beach on Monday. The seat includes Horry County, Georgetown County, most of Florence County and several other Pee Dee counties.

"The Pee Dee deserves a principled conservative leader who will go to Washington focused on the next generation and not the next election," Viers said. "I would have proudly stood with South Carolina's conservative congressional delegation in opposing an increase in the national debt ceiling. We have to stop Washington's reckless spending spree if we're ever going to get our economy back on track."

The Republican Viers has served in the SC Statehouse representing parts of Horry County since 2003.

"I firmly believe we do not have a revenue problem in Washington, we have a spending problem, and it's time to start making real changes," continued Viers. "For far too long the federal government has tried to replace God in the church and parents in the home. Now, government wants to spend all of your money and demands a 'thank you' for doing so. I'll work with South Carolina's conservative congressional delegation to make sure that doesn't happen."

Viers says he will bring a passion for impacting public policy through free-market solutions and a belief that the government that governs least, governs best to Washington.

The new district still needs approval from the federal government.
