The South Carolina Forestry Commission says the Hornet Fire burning in the Carolina Forest area of Horry County is 100 percent contained.
It says crews made a lot of progress this week to prepare the area against future re-ignition. They put in multiple fire breaks and doused hot spots with water.
The Forestry Commission emphasizes the fire is contained, not controlled.
"In wildland firefighting, a contained fire has been secured with firebreaks around the perimeter, and is not growing larger. A controlled fire is one which is producing no heat at all. It's highly likely that the Hornet Fire will re-ignite as weather conditions once again become fire-friendly," spokesman Scott Hawkins said in a press release.
By fire-friendly he means weather that is hot and dry with low humidity.
Forestry crews that normally work in this area continue to patrol the area daily in the air and on the group. But firefighters that work in other areas have been allowed to return home.
The Forestry Commission says fireworks started the fire on July 4th weekend.
