The issue of the wrong map used in two elections for Florence School District One isn't going away quietly.

Pat Gibson Hye-Moore and Alexis Pipkins are still upset over the fiasco surrounding the wrong map used in the school board elections in 2008 and 2010, even though neither of them represent the district in question.

"Some say move on, but how do you move on when you don't know what you're moving away from," said Alexis Pipkins, Sr.

"Everybody looks at and acts so lackadaisical about it, like okay it was a teaching moment let's move on. Well, I can't move on," said Pat Gibson Hye-Moore.

The U.S. Justice Department says the map was not the one approved by them .

The Justice Department has to approve any changes to voting maps based on Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Pipkins and Moore say the wrong map resulted in roughly 800 voters in the Glendale Community not voting on that race in either election.

Pipkins said, "This country was founded on that principal, no taxation without representation, and I'm just glad I don't live in that community."

Maggie Smith does, and she's not happy that she didn't get the chance to vote.

"Your voting power has been completely erased. That's like, I mean, that's quite a slap in the face," said Smith.

She wrote a letter to the school district expressing her concerns.

District officials replied they're not responsible, but say they want the correct map used in next year's election to include the Glendale community.

The response doesn't sit well with Moore and Pipkins.

They've hired an attorney to see if this incident should be settled in court.

"If it comes down to a lawsuit, then that's what will happen," said Pipkins.

"Is anyone looking for any monetary gain out of this? No, we only want the the door closed, and we want it closed properly, and when it's closed, we never want it reopened again," said Moore.

Moore and Pipkins will hold a public meeting Thursday evening so the attorney can talk with the community about legal options to handle the situation. The meeting is set for 6 o'clock at Trinity Baptist Church on West Darlington Street in Florence.
