Operation Welcome Home in March as wounded soldiers arrive on the Grand Strand from Walter Reed
"We're so aware of our own deficits, so when other people are like, we know your lives have changed, but it's okay, it just bolsters you up," Lieutenant Colonel Army Nurse Maureen Schafer said back on May 30th of the organization Scents for Soldiers.
Schafer was part of a group of soldiers the non profit organization took by bus from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. to Myrtle Beach. The trips, and the organization, are the creation of founder and Socastee resident Christina Sheely.
Sheely's good friend was shot in the head in serving in Afghanistan in October 2007. He was staying at Walter Reed, and she remembered going there to visit him for Thanksgiving.
"After a few visits and many chats with those healing from multiple wounds, we saw many things that these courageous men and women were missing. It was the simplest things made them feel more at home," Sheely writes on the group's website.
The group now makes occasional trips to visit each room at Walter Reed to ask what each family and patient needs to help make recuperation easier.
Scents for Soldiers is planning to deliver more items to Walter Reed July 28th and July 29th.
Some of the items frequently asked for are diapers for their children, Glade Glass Scents, cookies, neck massagers, dry erase boards, markers, wide leg shorts, and tear away pants. If you'd like to donate items or money, click here.
