While the mercury is rising, so are the number of people coming through Myrtle Beach International Airport.

Airport officials say the number of people flying into and out of Myrtle Beach increased more than 20 percent when compared to last June.

If you've been to the Myrtle Beach recently, you can tell it's been a little harder to get around than usual because of all the construction for the airport expansion.

Airport officials say they've never seen an increase like this in their history.

More than 108,000 people flew into Myrtle Beach last month. That's up more than 23 percent compared to last June.

The number of people who flew out of Myrtle Beach in June is also up - more than 22 percent, 102,000 people.

Lauren Morris, with Myrtle Beach International, says with the new markets and new flights to the area, they're not surprised the numbers increased. Eight commercial airlines currently serve Myrtle Beach International.

She adds that it's always good to see numbers on the rise, especially with the facility under construction to expand.

"The systems been working really well for us so far, and we're going to continue with the same formula that we've been using. So that when we move into the new terminal we'll have more room to expand. We'll have more room for passenger flow, for baggage, for screening."

Morris adds the airport's peak months aren't until July and August. Despite the construction, Myrtle Beach International is certainly open for business.

The airport expansion is expected to be complete in January 2013.
