(AP) -- South Carolina Republican Senate leaders are trying to regain control of how U.S. House district lines are drawn.
Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell said Wednesday that a proposal that won initial approval a day earlier will only create problems for the state.
Democrats joined a group of Republican lawmakers Tuesday to win key approval for a redistricting plan that puts a new U.S. House seat in the southern part of the state.
McConnell is a Charleston Republican and says Democrats butchered districts that had been carefully drawn by a legislative committee he heads.
Redistricting is required every decade to make sure election district lines are adjusted for population changes in the U.S. Census.
