Saturday evening the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the local United Way partnered together in an attempt to go down in history at the Beach Music Festival.

Chamber spokeswoman Nora Hembree says 1,915 people showed up to do the famous 60's dance.

But once the crowd found out Twist singer Chubby Checker was not going to perform his hit song many left disappointed. Despite the change, some still stayed for the dance.

Hembree says 69-year-old South Carolina native was at the festival but "by the time we had the record breaking number, Chubby had already begun performing on another stage and was unable to be moved."

To break the record, more than 1,692 people had to perform the Twist simultaneously for five minutes.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
