On Engineering Day at HGTC, students had to build a bridge that was light but could handle a heafty amount of weight.
Horry Georgetown Technical College hosted the 3rd annual Engineering Day Wednesday. It invited students from Brunswick Community College and Brunswick Educational Transition Center.
It consisted of four competitions, three building competitions and one computer competition.
The main event was the bridge challenge. Students' goal was to build the lightest bridge out of balsa wood that could handle the most amount of weight. The winning bridge took 1,003 pounds before cracking.
Students could work on their bridges in a semester-long project, with the last four weeks solely focused on the competitions.
Some students took weeks to build their bridges, others spent days. One student made his bridge yesterday. He didn't win.
The winner was James Hucks. He's a sophomore at Horry Georgetown Technical College. He got assortment of gift certificates to places like Homewood Metal Works and Senor Frogs.
