Betty Daniels, 49, of Johnsonville pleaded guilty to falsifying tax returns.

IRS agents got a tip that Daniels was claiming false dependent exemptions on her client's tax returns. Daniels is the owner and operator of Miss Betty's Tax Service.

Daniels admitted she filed an income tax return for a client that falsely claimed an earned income credit, additional child credit, and dependent exemptions. The exemptions totaled $6,017. The taxpayer didn't know the dependents named on the return or anything about the claims.

Daniels is awaiting sentencing.

She was named in a press release from United States Attorney Bill Nettles showing the IRS is working to root out dishonest tax preparers.

United States Attorney Nettles stated that press release, "Dishonest tax professionals harm the good reputation of honest ones and cheat all honest taxpayers. The vast majority of tax preparers are honest and do a good job. Unfortunately, the few dishonest tax preparers tarnish the reputation of the profession and hurt law abiding citizens."

IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent In Charge Jeannine A. Hammett added, "IRS-CI will aggressively pursue tax fraud where ever it is identified and is proud to provide its financial expertise to investigations of these schemes to defraud the American government and its taxpayers."

Attorney Nettles urges you to be careful when choosing a tax preparer and reminds you that you're the one responsible for all the information on your tax return.
