HORRY COUNTY, SC -- Horry County says it will end open adoptions for the remaining cats taken from the Sacred Vision Animal Sanctuary this month.
The owner of Sacred Vision, Elizabeth Owen, was charged with ill treatment of animals in September 2009 after complaints about the conditions of dozens of cats she was housing at a facility on Forestbrook Road.
Owen requested a jury trial and was allowed to keep the cats and the sanctuary while the case was pending. In the meantime, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals shot undercover video that led to a judge ordering the cats to be taken from the facility earlier this month.
Horry County seized 237 cats and a dog. 107 of the cats had to be euthanized for health reasons. http://www.carolinalive.com/news/story.aspx?id=588452
Since then, the Horry County Animal Care Center has been caring for the remaining cats at a facility in Socastee. Several adopt-a-thons have been held, and now only 34 cats from Sacred Vision remain at the temporary shelter.
Horry County says Tuesday, April 5 will be the last day the cats can be adopted from the temporary location at 200 River Road. The hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The adoption fees will be $25 per cat and the cost will include spaying/neutering, microchip, Feline RCP vaccine, one year Rabies vaccine, Feline Leukemia testing, deworming, flea treatment, and 30-days free of pet health insurance.
Horry County says all of the cats have been examined by a license veterinarian and have received antibiotic therapy.
On Wednesday, April 6, the cats that are left will be moved to the main Conway location, 1923 Industrial Park Road, where they will still be available for adoption.
