DILLON -- The Dillon County School Board approved bids for new schools.

Construction on Dillon Middle School should start in the next 30 days. That's the school that will replace J.V. Martin.

J.V. Martin is more than 100 years old. It was thrust into the spotlight by President Barack Obama who made a visit there during his campaign after a student wrote him about the school conditions.

In 2007, part of J.V. Martin closed because it was considered to be a fire hazard. With more than 500 students, they school district had to bring in more portables and reshuffle classrooms.

USDA $24 million loan will go towards construction of the new school.
