(AP) -- South Carolina's former state treasurer who served 10 months in federal prison on a cocaine charge is advocating a change in the way the U.S. deals with drugs.
Thomas Ravenel wrote an opinion article that will be published in The Post and Courier of Charleston on Saturday. The newspaper reports that the article calls America's war on drugs a failure and says marijuana and cocaine shouldn't be illegal.
The 48-year-old Ravenel resigned as treasurer just months after taking office when he was indicted in June 2007. The multimillionaire land developer pleaded guilty to buying cocaine for himself and to share with friends.
From his home in south Florida, Ravenel told the newspaper he wrote the editorial to spark debate on how the country deals with drugs.
