Josh Gelinas, a spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Corrections, says an inmate at Evans Correctional Institution in Bennettsville got sick Tuesday, and they thought he might have contracted spinal meningitis.

The inmate was immediately taken to the hospital, and the entire prison placed on lockdown.

Gelinas says, Thursday afternoon they learned the inmate tested negative for spinal meningitis, but positive for bacterial meningitis.

The lockdown was lifted, but the inmates' dormitory was thoroughly sanitized and cleaned, according to Gelinas.

The inmate is still in the hospital.

His name isn't being released, but Gelinas says prison officials are in contact with his family.
