(AP) -- Their donors continue to give generously, particularly heading into the food-centric holiday season. But food bank managers throughout the Carolinas say they constantly struggle to meet the demand of more and more hungry families.

Harvest Hope Food Bank executive director Denise Holland says fundraising for her Columbia agency has increased by double digits.

But not even that sort of uptick can keep pace with the area's needy families. Holland says her emergency food pantries served 750 families on Monday, a one-day record.

At Charlotte, N.C.'s Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, executive director Kay Carter says donors have apologized for not being able to keep up with the increasing demand for help.
