(AP) -- A South Carolina museum now includes a gallery to show off its threads.

The Charleston Museum on Thursday opens a 2,000-square-foot permanent gallery to display its textile and clothing collections.

Museum officials say the new second-floor gallery allows the museum to better display its collections of textiles and clothing, considered one of the finest in the Southeast.

The space has specialized lighting and controlled environmental conditions to safely show the collection. It also offers interactive displays for visitors.

The first exhibit in the gallery is "Threads of War" including clothing, uniforms, flags and other items from the Civil War period.

The Charleston Museum is the first in the nation, dating to 1773.
