(AP) -- RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Election Day is approaching, but North Carolina voters can make their decisions right now.

The state's early voting period begins Thursday. Voters eager to cast their ballots or who don't want to go to their precinct on Election Day can vote through Oct. 30 at elections offices and selected locations in all 100 counties.

People can also register and vote on the same day during the period. Mail-in absentee ballots are still allowed.

The top race is for U.S. Senate, where the choices are Republican Richard Burr, Democrat Elaine Marshall and Libertarian Mike Beitler. All 13 U.S. House seats, 170 spots in the General Assembly and dozens of judgeships and local positions also are on

ballots.

A record 2.6 million people cast votes early in 2008.
