A judge set bond Wednesday at $100,000 for a man accused of attacking a Florence teenager.
Wednesday morning, Chase McClary, 22, appeared before Magistrate Judge Belinda Timmons at the Florence County Detention Center.
Last month, Florence County deputies say McClary hit the 16-year-old with a mug and when the mug broke, he continued to cut the boy with the pieces. Deputies say he yelled racial slurs at the teen while he attacked him.
McClary was arrested about two weeks ago in Charlotte on a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Judge Timmons tells NewsChannel 15, during the bond hearing she asked the victims' family if they had any concerns and they indicated there were none so she set McClary's bond at $100,000. But it comes with strict conditions. He is not to have contact with the victim's family by phone, email, or a third party. McClary can't talk about the case on Facebook or other social media. The judge said she levied the social media restriction because McClary had already been talking about the case on Facebook.
If he's released, he'll have to wear an electronic monitoring device and he can't leave Florence County.
Federal police are looking into this case and say they may charge McClary under hate crime laws.
