Highway Patrol says Thomas Gallagher, 18, of Pawleys Island turned himself in Monday afternoon in connection with a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a Waccamaw High School football player Saturday night.

Gallagher is charged with one count of leaving the scene of a collision with personal injury.

Jasonn Russell is in critical condition at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston after being hit while walking on Litchfield Road.

Russell is a junior at WHS. He's on the football team and a member of the concert band. The mother of one of Russell's friends says he has broken bones and a possible brain injury.

Russell, according to the friend's mother, had a "good night" Sunday night and briefly opened his eyes and responded to smelling salts.

He's still in the hospital as of Monday afternoon.

Highway Patrol says the accident is still under investigation.
