RICHBURG, S.C. (AP) -- A deputy coroner says a South Carolina high school football player who collapsed during a preseason football game suffered from a heart defect.

The Herald of Rock Hill reported Thursday that 18-year-old Lewisville High School running back Brian Colvin died from a condition that affects the muscle of the heart.

Chester County Deputy Coroner Tommy Williams says the disease thickens part of the heart muscle, making the heart work harder to pump blood. Williams says the condition would not have shown up during a physical examination.

He says Colvin was in excellent shape.

Colvin died at Chester Regional Medical Center after he collapsed on the field during a scrimmage against Westminster Catawba on Aug. 13.
