Officer Maurice Merritt is on administrative duty at the Cheraw Police Department, after being shot during a traffic stop last month.

Police say Merritt was shot by Travis Quick, after he pulled him over for a traffic violation in the city limits of Cheraw. Officers say Quick shot and killed himself after he was confronted by officers.

Merritt survived the shooting, but a bullet is still lodged in his shoulder. Doctors plan to remove the bullet sometime next month.

We're told once the bullet is removed, Officer Merritt will return to his regular duties as a patrol officer.

Cheraw Police Chief Jay Brooks says Merritt will be inducted in the FBI Survivors Group in Atlanta on Monday.

Merritt was shot in the line of duty when he worked as a police officer in Greensboro, North Carolina a few years ago.
