Cheraw Police say Officer Maurice Merritt is stable at a Florence hospital.
They say Merritt tried to pull over a 2010 Chevy Impala, but the suspect wouldn't stop and a chase ensued.
Police say the suspect came to a stop of Godfrey Street where the 27-year-old suspect shot Officer Merritt twice as he was getting out of his patrol car.
One shot hit Merritt in the chest area of his bullet proof vest. The other punctured his side.
The suspect fled into a nearby building where he was cornered by police and shot himself in the head in front of the officers.
The suspect was 26-year-old Travis Quick from Bennettsville. Quick has several violent charges on his record, including a five year prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter.
Officer Merritt is a six-year veteran law enforcement officer. This is his second time being shot in the line of duty. He was wounded in 2007 as an officer in Greensboro, North Carolina.
